The San Francisco 49ers have reached a critical juncture, making a significant decision about the potential trade of star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk‘s name has been a consistent subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, but, it appears the organization has made a decision on his future.

Aiyuk is skipping the 49ers’ voluntary OTAs amid contract extension negotiations that have stalled out. However, it does not seem as though San Francisco is considering trading Aiyuk, and whenever he does return to action, will catch his next pass in a 49ers uniform.

According to Mike Garafolo, Aiyuk and the 49ers have made no progress on an extension, even though the asking price and market value of the 26-year-old continues to rise this offseason.

The longer the 49ers wait to work out an extension, the costlier a deal is likely to become.

Already this offseason, A.J. Brown reset the wide receiver market on a long-term extension with the Philadelphia Eagles shortly after the Detroit Lions inked Amon-Ra St. Brown to a long-term contract worth $120 million over four years that includes $35.3 million fully guaranteed.

But, Aiyuk isn’t the only high-priced receiver eligible for an extension, so, there is some impetus for the 49ers to get a deal done before the Cincinnati Bengals extend Ja’Marr Chase or the Dallas Cowboys sign CeeDee Lamb to a new deal.

Last season, Aiyuk was a driving force for a 49ers’ offense that powered a run to the Super Bowl by catching 75 passes for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

The deal Aiyuk ultimately signs remains to be seen, but given the star players at the position eligible for a deal, he holds some leverage over the 49ers to get something done sooner rather than later.
