After they made a flurry of roster moves to accommodate for injuries and defensive insufficiencies, the Boston Red Sox have designated a new addition for assignment.

Zack Short was officially with the Red Sox for six days. It was announced he would be DFA’d after Boston’s game against the Atlanta Braves on May 7.

Short was likely DFA’d so Boston can activate Romy González, a utility player it signed this offseason. González made two appearances for the Red Sox before being placed on the 10-day injured list with a wrist sprain. His IL stint was retroactive to April 11 and his recovery took longer than anticipated.

Gonzalez’s reinstatement to the lineup could help the Red Sox fix one of their latest issues. He wields a better bat than short, and Boston has struggled to score runners in recent games.

The Red Sox left 13 men on base on May 7 against the Braves because they struggled to score in critical moments. Jarren Duran knocked a one-out triple in the fifth frame, but the following two Red Sox fanned to leave him aboard. Boston also left eight men on in its May 4 game against the Twins.

Throughout April, the Red Sox were towards the top of the home run leaderboard, they even held second place at one point. Recently, Boston has struggled in the power department and it has fallen down the list to 12th place with 38 homers.

The Sox’s strikeout numbers have remained high, however. They hold second place in total strikeouts on the young season with 356. Boston needs to put the ball in play more often to win more games, and coming through with runners on base would be a great place to start its upswing.

Brayan Bello made rehab start, his next appearance will be with the Red Sox

Brayan Bello made his first and only rehab start on May 7 before his return to the Red Sox lineup. The pitcher was placed on the 15-day IL, retroactive to April 21, with right lat tightness.

He only pitched 2.2 innings in Portland and his performance wasn’t as clean as Sox fans have come to expect. Bello let up two earned runs, four hits and two walks. He struck out three batters and hopefully, his command will be improved by the time he arrives back in Boston’s starting rotation.

Miguel Bleis drilled his first home run of the year for the Salem Red Sox

Boston’s No.4 prospect started slow with Single-A Salem this season, but Miguel Bleis is hitting his stride in recent games.

The 20-year-old hit his first home run of the season on May 7 and his ago-ahead shot lifted his team to the win. Bleis has posted at least two hits in three of his last four games and two of them have gone for extra bases.
