Ruben Amorim has been linked with moves to West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool this summer, but the Portuguese tactician will stay at Sporting CP this summer
Ruben Amorim has revealed he is staying at Sporting CP – just two weeks after holding talks with West Ham over becoming their new manager.
Amorim has been linked with a move to a host of top European clubs this summer, including Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham. The 39-year-old even travelled to London to hold talks with the Hammers board over replacing David Moyes at the end of the season.
However, Amorim did not think West Ham was the right fit and apologised for making the trip to England, admitting it was a “mistake”. Now, after Sporting were crowned Primeira Liga champions for the second time in 21 years, Amorim has confirmed he does not plan on leaving the club this summer.
He said: “I’m staying, I have a contract with Sporting. It’s special. The first was atypical, with no public and no European competitions. This time, it had all that, and we did it! Now it’s time to try for the third.”
Amorim, who was appointed as Sporting’s new manager in March 2020, guided the club to the league title in his first full season. They also lifted the Taca da Liga in the same campaign.
After two years without a major trophy, Sporting finally returned to the top of Portuguese football by winning the league after second-place Benfica lost to Famalicao on Sunday. It capped off an impressive season for Amorim, with the Lisbon giants winning 27 of their 34 league matches so far this term.
With Arne Slot expected to take over at Liverpool and Mauricio Pochettino enjoying a recent up-tick in form with Chelsea, options for Amorim to move to the Premier League were dwindling before he confirmed he would stay at Sporting. He has won 156 of his 220 matches in charge since taking over.

Amid the title celebrations, Gyokeres was asked about his future and admitted he cannot promise wearing the Sporting colours next season. “It’s football, I can’t promise anything,” the former Championship forward said.
“I have a contract and I won’t be sad if I stay, I’m very happy, but we’ll see what happens. We can’t predict much, but let’s see what next year will be like, we still have games this season.”
